Li Group Research Environment

University Location

The University of North Carolina (UNC) is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, a beautiful and friendly college town. With three world class universities (UNC, Duke University, and North Carolina State University), the Research Triangle not only fosters creative cutting-edge research, but also is a great place to live.

Graduate Programs

UNC's graduate programs in Genetics and in Biostatistics are both highly rated. For example, according to the assessment conducted by the National Research Council (NRC), research activity of our Genetics and Biostatistics Programs rank No. 5 and No. 12 respectively (NRC Ranking). We are also very proud of our graduate program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (BCB), as it blends the best of both worlds for both computational and genomic training.

Academic Environment

The Li Group is mainly located in the Department of Genetics. Dr. Li also have office space in the Department of Biostatistics.

Department of Genetics

Within the Genetics department, UNC faculty are leaders in the Cancer Genome Atlas (Perou, Hayes, Chiang), the ENCODE consortium (Lieb, Furey), the Collaborative Cross (de Villena, Sullivan, Valdar), the 1000 Genomes Project (Li), and several large scale genetic studies of complex human traits (Mohlke, Lange). Labs in close vicinity in the Department of Genetics include Mohlke lab, Sullivan lab, Lange lab, Furey Lab and Valdar lab.

Department of Biostatistics

In the department of Biostatistics, Drs. Danyu Lin, Fred Wright, Fei Zou, Wei Sun, and Mike Wu are experts in developing statistical methods and computational tools for the analysis of large scale, multi-dimensional genetic data.
Research groups in the two departments cover a full spectrum of research in the genetics area from study design, data collection, method development, analysis, and subsequent wet-lab follow-up. There are also numerous bright graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research scientists in the vicinity whom we enjoy working with on a daily basis.

Computing Facility

The Li Group has access to the University Research Computing Cluters with >5,000 CPUs, research clusters with 100-300 CPUs in the department of Genetics and Biostatistics, as well as facilities at RENCI (Renaissance Computing Institute).
